If the issue is money, then let’s figure out a way the city can split the cost with the people, or how both sides can benefit. If the city doesn’t have the money, then teach the people how to fix it so they can fix it themselves. Give them the tools. Then the city can save money, and it creates jobs.

I used to go to the doctor afraid of what I was going to hear–now I go waiting for the results and wanting to hear what they see. That impact for me has impacted my church—for them to see my journey and take on their own. Today I want people to know why they want to be healthy. Everyone has their own why.

Having grown up on the south side of Chicago, I was well aware of economic disparities. However, I only became acutely aware of health disparities as a case manager in an acute care state hospital, the now-closed Tinley Park Mental Health Center.
